About the producer
Yosis Hugo Calderón Martínez has been working with coffee nearly all of his life. He points to his grandfather, a coffee producer with whom he spent most of his childhood, as the reason for his strong work ethic and knowledge of what goes into producing excellent coffee. For Don Hugo, to be a coffee producer means holding onto hope and struggling to produce the best coffees he can each year, even in the face of new challenges. This harvest, his biggest challenges are Guatemala's changing climate and rapidly decreasing workforce. His farm, Finca La Ceiba, bears the name of Guatemala's national tree, which is considered sacred in Mayan culture and is protected by law. Kapeh Utz is excited to be partnering with Don Hugo for the first time this year!
The Pacamara varietal is a hybrid, born of a cross between the Pacas and Maragogyhpe (or ”elephant bean”) varietals. Originating from El Salvador, Pacamara is a relatively young varietal, with each new generation of the plant possessing unique characteristics!
